The altarpiece dates to the 18th century and is the work of Giovan Battista Fino. It depicts the apparition of the Madonna and Child to Saint Julius.
In the bottom left, the image almost certainly represents the Island of San Giulio on Lake Orta, the island the saint reached by walking across the water on his cloak, and from which he drove away dragons and serpents to build his hundredth church, the Basilica of San Giulio.
