The altarpiece is all that remains of the previous version of the church, dedicated to Santa Maria del Paradiso and likely built in the twelfth century.
The altarpiece features the figure of the Risen Christ (now missing his right arm) resting on the tabernacle's small temple. Around Christ are six panels, three on each side, depicting bas-relief scenes from the Passion, all inspired by the Gospel of St. John.
