The church has been rebuilt and expanded several times since its foundation, which took place at the beginning of the 17th century. Consecrated on March 18, 1626, it was then demolished and rebuilt - from 1660 to 1671 - with larger dimensions to accommodate the ever-increasing number of faithful.
In 1783 it was radically renovated by the architect Tommaso Bicciaglia, a student and collaborator of Giannandrea Lazzarini. The works were the consequence of the transfer of the parish of San Michele Arcangelo to the church of San Giuseppe, after the suppression of the brotherhood of the same name.
