MASSIMILIANO RUFFINO (Catania, 1975)
He studies pictorial decoration at the Art Institute of Catania and later painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. He attends an apprenticeship course at painting studios and workshops of Sicilian ceramists. In 1996 he published his first comic book story The Country of the Mad Houses, edited by Centro Fumetto Andrea Pazienza, Cremona. From 1998 to 2001 he manages a glass decoration workshop in Catania, simultaneously publishing "The two chasing each other", adaptation to comics by Franz Kafka's tale. In 2002 he moves to Milan and begins to devote himself to a project of his own, the Dream's Project, drawing a collection of futuristic stories in balance between reality and dream. In 2007, he produces 13 illustrations for the novel Amalgrab di Guergana Radeva, Mangrovie Edizioni, and presents two original tables at the Future Film Festival in Bologna. In 2011 he made 5 illustrations for the Amalgrammer novel by Guergana Radeva, Akkady editions. Since 2012 he has made a series of paintings related to the project Face, which exhibits to the Studio Iroko, in Bologna, compositions of portraits in a tribal style where the faces of the encountered people become dreamy, dreamy and dreamy totems. Since 2014 he draws and paints fantastic images and surreal worlds that soon become a true little fantasy and fun universe. An example is Happy Island, a project
presented in occasione of the exposition Pop Island at Space Hair and Art in Milan, where characters stolen from the animal kingdom, revisited in a style that swings between the illustration for children and the world of pop art, populate surreal and enveloping scenarios. He loves the artwork and cartoon scene from which he is inspired to create fantastic and dreamy worlds populated by grotesque and colorful characters.
Massimiliano Ruffino creates spectacular worlds where everything is possible. It is as if he first dived with all his unceasing creative vein of an excellent designer and illustrator, into a universe made up of landscapes and animals, from fantastic and amazing creatures. Absolute protagonist is the color and a great effect of a great energy, of overwhelming instability that seems to pervade everything.
