Milan - Interesting details, villages of: Ronchetto delle RaneMostly represented styles: 0

The word ronchetto indicated in the Middle Ages a deforested area and converted to an agricultural field and is linked to the word "roncola", a sort of machete, used to eliminate unwanted plants and brambles.

Ronchetto delle Rane (ie Ronchetto of the Frogs) is the largest of the so-called Tre Ronchetti (ie Three Ronchetti). The others are Ronchettone and Ronchettino, all very near and not shown on this page.
They are currently located in the extreme southern outskirts of Milan, where the urban area begins to leave room for cultivated fields.

It is one of the Milanese villages (which are in fact many, several of which were completely incorporated by Milan and gave their name to quarters of the city) and one of the best preserved. Surrounded by cultivated fields and irrigation canals, it includes centuries-old buildings, many of which are empty. It should however be said that fortunately the process of abandonment has recently stopped and new activities have started to give new life to the neighborhood, in particular a wine shop, Il Ristoro delle Rane. Moreover, at least a part of the new buildings that were added to the original ones are rather in style and do not ruin the environment.

A particular mention deserves the Church of the Saints Peter and Paul (Fig. 9, 10), a church of very ancient origins but in which the currently prevailing imprint is the Baroque one. It represents a true pearl of art and history: while the exteriors are very simple, the interiors are richly decorated and in the apse there are some splendid frescoes by Ercole Procaccini the Younger.
Even the organ, recently restored, is of great value, as it was built in 1748 and is therefore one of the oldest organs present in Milan.
