Sforza Castle presents The Elephant in the room project by the BYBORRE textile innovation atelier, directed by the Dutch designer Borre Akkersdijk. The themes of technology and technical innovation applied to textile design will be investigated, with particular attention to the ethical aspects of the fashion market. The gaze on the future will be related to the weaving experiences of the past, of which the Museums of the Sforza Castle conserve the history and memory, thanks to an important collection of tapestries and fabrics, from the late antique era to the mature Renaissance, from fragments of Coptic fabrics to the monumental Gonfalone in Milan. Particular attention will be paid to the Trivulzio tapestries designed by Bramantino, which constitute an exceptional example of early sixteenth-century Lombard textile manufacturing.
The title of the project is inspired by the elephant depicted in a fresco from the Sforza era under the portico of the same name in the Ducal Court of the Castle. Near the portico, an elephant made of fabric by BYBORRE will be set up, in a constant dialogue between the historical-cultural context and the new design proposals.
The project winds its way between external and internal spaces, with the setting up of an installation in the Sala della Balla, home of the precious cycle of Trivulzio tapestries, and the organization in the same room of talks on the future of textile design and guided tours at the Trivulzio Tapestries, in Italian (from 20 to 23 April, every day, at 3 pm) and in English (from 17 to 23 April, every day, at 12)
